35mm Film Wedding: Capturing Timeless Moments

Some weddings feel like a love letter to the city — Ryan and Raychel’s was exactly that. Melbourne in all its moody beauty: soft light filtering through the State Library’s domed ceilings, trams rattling past, and the hum of a city quietly going about its day while two people promised forever.

They held their wedding at the iconic State Library of Victoria — one of those spaces that feels sacred even when it’s full of life. It’s open to the public until 6pm, so we enjoyed the slower part of the day at Hotel Windsor, for their preparations and St Patricks Cathedral for their nuptials. The reading room at the State Library is such a fabulous place from above and on ground level. The Cocktail Hour was held here, before moving into the Ian Potter Hall for the Reception.

After their vows at St Patricks Cathedral, we ventured through Fitzroy Gardens, taking a breather post ceremony. The best moments come from the light. And the lighting was magical!

We finished the portrait session at the Parliament Steps. A Melbourne icon, and one of my favourite spots for that grand, editorial feel. Raychel and Ryan shared the steps with a lot of other couples, as it’s a super popular spot!

Throughout the day, we shot both digital and 35mm film, weaving the two together to tell their story in full colour and texture. The film shots are always my favourites — there’s something in the way film captures light that just can’t be replicated. The grain, the imperfection, the way it feels like memory.

We covered 11 hours that day… from early morning details to the last dance under city lights, and not once did the energy dip. Their friends, their laughter, the emotion that lingered as the hours passed and we loved every moment!

As a photographer, I’ve always been drawn to weddings that feel alive. The ones where you can sense the heartbeat in every frame.
