This blog post is for you if you’re planning your own wedding or capturing memories as a photographer, staying updated on the latest trends can enhance your experience and ensure your photos reflect the essence of your special day. Let’s discuss some of the most captivating wedding photography trends for 2024.
1. Candid Moments: Capturing Authenticity
Gone are the days of stiff, posed photographs dominating wedding albums. Couples now prefer candid moments that capture genuine emotions throughout the day. From laughter-filled exchanges to quiet, heartfelt glances, candid photography immortalises the essence of the day in its purest form. This is also known as Documentary Photography. I always say that my work stands on the documentary side of the wedding fence, with a whimsical feel.
2. 35mm Film Photography: A Return to Timeless Elegance
In an era dominated by digital technology, there’s a nostalgic charm in the resurgence of 35mm film photography. Known for its rich colours, fine grain, and timeless aesthetic, 35mm film adds a romantic and vintage feel to wedding photos. Couples are increasingly drawn to the authentic, soft tones and the artistic depth that film captures, making it a significant trend for 2024 & 2025. I offer photography with digital & analogue film, you can read more about my packages here.
3. Shutter Blur: Using Movement to create Emotive Imagery
Creating visual interest through shutter blur techniques adds a dynamic and artistic dimension to wedding photography. By intentionally blurring certain elements of the photograph while keeping the focus on the subject, photographers can convey movement and emotion. This technique beautifully captures the energy of dance floors, outdoor celebrations, and other lively moments, enhancing the narrative of the wedding day.
4. Editorial Style: Elevating Wedding Photography to Art
Inspired by fashion editorials, the editorial style of wedding photography emphasises artistic composition and storytelling in a different style to documentary photography. I use both photographic styles throughout the day, for example, you really can’t be editorial while a couples wedding ceremony is unfolding, that is a moment in the day where Documentary Photography is used. I play on the idea of Editorial photography when it comes to your portraits as a couple, your reception, your dance-floor and the moments spent getting ready at the beginning of the day. There are so many opportunities to use this style of photography throughout the day and still adapt to Documentary where needed.
5. Environmental and Sustainable Practices: Mindful Choices
As awareness of environmental impact grows, couples are making more conscious choices. Sustainable practices can include, opting for local vendors to reduce carbon footprint, choosing natural landscapes and seasonal florals for your day. Vendors nowadays are all over this, but it’s a good reminder to be aware of what is in season when planning your floral arrangement with your florist. These choices not only align with personal values but also contribute to our environmental impact.
As you plan your wedding or embark on capturing weddings as a photographer, consider how these trends can enhance your experience and help you create unforgettable memories. Embrace the essence of each moment, celebrate the beauty of love, and let your wedding photographs tell a story that will be cherished for generations to come.
