Port Phillip Estate on the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria, is one of my favourite wedding venues to work at! Not only for it’s beautiful landscape views, but for it’s incredible service, food, wine and accessible location. It was designed by an award winning architect and the attention to details go far beyond a classic wedding venue. I have photographed 5 weddings at Port Phillip Estate in Red Hill and Michelle & Jason’s was the first on 35mm film! I’ve included 5 tips to help you capture the best moments on 35mm film with your Wedding Photographer.
Michelle & Jason opted for a Melbourne Destination Wedding back in 2019. They were coming from Singapore with 60 of their closest guests. Of course, we know that the Australia Borders were close for a couple of years, so their plans changed and they had a courthouse wedding back home in the meantime. They also had two beautiful children during that time. I was lucky enough to still be asked to document their celebrations here in Melbourne, taking place at their original venue with all the original vendors able to take part. If you’re intrigued by the idea of having your wedding captured on 35mm film, here are a few tips to help you make the most of this unique experience with your Photographer:
- Find an Experienced Photographer: Look for a photographer who specialises in film and has a portfolio that showcases their expertise. Film photography requires a different skill set than digital, so it’s important to choose someone who is well-versed in the medium. It also adds a nice touch to your digital gallery. I have had couples want all of their wedding documented on film, and I would happily do so for the right couple.
- Discuss Your Vision: Communicate your vision and preferences with your photographer. I love getting to know what galleries stand out best to my couples, show me your vision board and we can make it happen! I have a range of cameras I use also, a point and shoot, a manual 35mm and a manual 120mm film camera.
- Embrace the Process: Understand that film photography is a slower, more deliberate process. Trust your photographer’s expertise and embrace the unique workflow that comes with shooting on film. I often will shoot on digital first and follow the moment with a shot on film. This enables you to get most moments in digital and film. As I said above, I can cater to your desires if you’d like more film than digital… this can be a customised experience.
- Plan for the Waiting Period: Be prepared for a longer turnaround time for receiving your photos. The anticipation can be part of the fun, knowing that something special is being crafted just for you. I send off my files to Hillvale Photo Lab in Melbourne and sometimes it can take up to 3-4 weeks depending on when I can post the rolls of to be developed. They also have a waiting period of 2 weeks, but sometimes it can be much faster, depending on the urgency of and how many weddings I have waiting to be sent off. I also process all of the photos with some colouring and cropping. The results you see have been edited to match your digital gallery as much as possible.
