3 Tips to make your Wedding Photography Everything you ever dreamed of & more – written by a Melbourne Wedding Photographer

Your wedding photos are one of the most important investments you’ll make for your big day. After all, they’re the only thing you’ll have left to remember all the special moments from that day for years to come. That’s why it’s so important to make the most of your wedding photography and get the best possible results.

Here are three things you can do to ensure that your wedding photos are everything you’ve ever dreamed of:

  1. Hire a photographer who aligns with you as a couple & whose style you love.

This is one of the most important decisions you’ll make when it comes to your wedding photography. Take some time to browse different photographers’ websites and portfolios to find someone whose style you love. Pay attention to the types of photos they take, the colours and tones they use, and the overall mood of their images. Look at whole portfolios on their website, not just instagram. This is a thing that most couples overlook, just because a photographer posts on instagram, it’s not everything, so look and research further to ensure transparency.

Once you’ve found a few photographers that you like, schedule a consultation with each of them to get to know them better and learn more about their approach to wedding photography. I offer a free discovery call to all couples enquiring with me to ensure we have a chance to say hello and see if we’re a great fit. Oscar & Bronte’s Wedding featured in Vogue Australia is one of my favourite galleries on my website: it epitomises my style, vibe and approach.

  1. Meet your photographer in person, do an Engagement Session or have a Meeting!

An engagement session is a great way to get to know your photographer better and get comfortable being in front of the camera. It’s also a great opportunity to get a few beautiful photos of the two of you together before the wedding. If you don’t want to have an engagement session, I always meet my couples for a lovely dinner in the lead up to their wedding so that we can get to know each other, laugh, discuss all the larger logistical details and it’s a great opportunity to bridge the gap between photographer/client. My aim is to become friends with my couples so that I show up on the day and they know me straight away!

  1. Plan out your day with your photographer.

On the day of your wedding, you’ll be busy with a million things. That’s why it’s important to plan out your day with your photographer in advance. This will ensure that they know when and where to be to capture all the important moments. If you have a Wedding Planner, they will also usually liaise with your photographer to ensure they are kept up to date with updates.

Be sure to create a shot list of all the must-have photos you want, I always ask my couples if there are any guests of honour, special sentiments they are including in their day, and “must” have moments documented so that I can make a note of it all in my run sheet.

Here are a few additional tips for making the most of your wedding photography:

  • Trust your photographer. We are the experts, let us do what we do best on the day and have trust that we will do what we have planned & discussed.
  • Be yourself and have fun! The more relaxed and happy you are, the better your photos will be.
  • Don’t be afraid to get creative. Your photographer is there to capture your unique love story. So don’t be afraid to ask for photos that are special to you.
