A low-key proposal called for a relaxed beach and backyard wedding. The couple, Oscar & Bronte, chose to exchange vows during an intimate beachside morning on November 11th 2017, before hosting their wedding reception in their own backyard later in the day! They prepared for the intimate ceremony together, with their nieces and parents, and it was so magical to document. I still remember the magic of the day all these years later, and I hope you can too…

‘To love and be loved
is to feel the sun from both sides.’

The bride chose a Zimmermann dress, which ended up being a last minute decision. “I actually had bought my first wedding dress a year before we even decided to get married, I got it altered twice and then a week before the ceremony I decided it wasn’t the right feel. I walked into Zimmermann with my best friend, Oscar and my mother-in-law and found a dress that just felt right. Oscar loved it and I felt so comfortable so that was a great last minute decision.” The bride drew inspiration from the 1975 film Picnic at Hanging Rock. She went barefoot at the ceremony and wore a large straw hat by Lack Of Color. “I wanted my make-up look to be quite natural and sun-kissed, with my hair worn like any other day, the overall aim was just to look myself and not overdone.”
“We always knew we would have our ceremony at Southside Beach on the Great Ocean Road, just around the corner from Bells beach,” says Brontë. “It is a place Oscar and I have always come to relax and unwind from the city!” The couple decided against a bridal party, aside from the flower girls who opened the ceremony. Brontë’s father officiated the wedding and her mother read a paragraph from Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë, which she revealed was the inspiration for her daughter’s name. There was very little styling required at the ceremony, due to the incredible backdrop provided by the cliff face. “Saying the vows we wrote to one in another in a incredible place of nature will be forever ingrained in my mind, it felt like the world melted away and it was just the two of us.”
Brontë is a professional florist and created her own bouquet. “I had many ideas for the florals and styling of the day, I wanted to keep it all quite simple and let the locations speak for themselves. The colours in the cliff at the beach set the tone for the entire day’s colour palette, I have always been drawn to this very earthy colour palette so we continued it throughout the whole day.” The bride and groom enjoyed fish and chips on the beach after becoming husband and wife. “We loved our elopement, it was such an intimate celebration leading up to the wedding day!” The bride and groom held their wedding reception in their own backyard, spilling out onto one of Melbourne’s laneways. This allowed them to keep a relaxed tone to their wedding and also gave them a blank canvas.
The bride used her knowledge of florals, letting her imagination run wild to bring the space to life. The couple also sourced vintage furniture to complete the look. “We loved the idea of having a street party vibe just outside our home, it was so relaxed and fun with beer, wine and kombucha on tap, plus all you can eat souvlaki and ice cream.” “I love using textures that grow by the seaside, as well as dried fauna and flora so a lot of what was used on the day I had been collecting long before we decided to get hitched! I suppose it was really just a chance to experiment and play around with ideas I had been dreaming up!” For their reception, the bride and groom wore the clothes they’d worn at the ceremony, just styled differently.
“For the evening I wanted to dress up the look, wearing a red lip, embroidered black heeled boots and earrings.” The groom simply added a leather jacket. “The morning after our wedding we were so tired, very relieved that there was no more planning to do but mostly just so happy that we pulled it off and it was everything we could have ever dreamed of.”
